When it comes to the sea, Italy has nothing to envy of any other country in the world. And among the seaside resorts, a leading role is played by the Italian islands, which are among the most splendid destinations for those looking for dream beaches. Off the coast of our peninsula there are over 800 of them, most of which are uninhabited: only a few, however, fully deserve to be included in a special ranking of the most beautiful Italian islands.
Which ones are they? In this post we will see the 6 islands that will leave you speechless!
Italian islands to visit
Sardinia
1850 km of rugged coastline surrounding 24000 km2 of undisputed natural beauty!
An infinite succession of rocky cliffs, pristine emerald coves, small beaches with crystal clear water, sparkling granite coasts, sea caves, natural pools and countless small islands and archipelagos to explore.
13 Protected Areas with National Parks, Regional Parks and Marine Protected Areas that are home to fantastic biodiversity.
The magnificent "Mediterranean scrub" vegetation leaves the backdrop to prosperous woods and beautiful mountain panoramas.

Sicily
Sicily offers surprising landscapes at any time of the year, UNESCO heritage cities, the warmth and kindness of a welcoming people, uncontaminated natural landscapes, sandy beaches and cliffs that drop sheer into the Mediterranean Sea, the power and majesty of Etna , the largest active volcano in Europe. Not to mention the extraordinary food and wine tradition of this island. Get lost in the countryside, among fine vineyards and citrus groves, fields of olive and almond trees, expanses of carob trees and immense cultivations of ancient Sicilian grains.

Tremiti Islands
Often unjustly ignored by the most classic tourist itineraries, the Tremiti Islands, off the Adriatic coast of Puglia and the Gargano promontory, are absolutely among the islands to visit in Italy at least once in a lifetime. The Tremiti are a small paradise made in Italy, a protected natural marine oasis which is therefore not a destination for mass tourism, but which can be the perfect choice for a day boat excursion, starting from the port of Termoli in Molise. Here the lucky visitors will find themselves in front of a pristine sea with crystalline reflections, perfect for diving lovers but also for those simply looking for enchanted nature and idyllic views. Only two islands of the archipelago are inhabited, that of San Domino, the largest, and that of San Nicola, while Capraia and Pianosa host only a rich fauna of fish and birds. The Tremiti are a real open-air aquarium, where admiring the transparency of their waters still echoes ancient legends and memories of their past as a penal colony. A destination that will surprise and touch you deeply.

CAPRI
Capri is an island located in the Gulf of Naples, a few miles away from the Sorrento peninsula in Campania, to which it was once united. Capri is currently one of the most sought after destinations by international tourism. This is thanks to the disarming beauty of its coasts with jagged profiles and caves that open into the rock. The island of Capri is divided into three areas: Marina Grande, where the port is located, Capri, a center that revolves around the famous little square, Anacapri, the highest picturesque municipality on the island. The centers of Capri and Anacapri are both pedestrianized and there is only one road where it is possible to pass by means of transport which from Marina Grande leads to Anacapri, with intersections which lead respectively to Marina Piccola, the Punta Carena lighthouse and the area of the Blue Grotto.

Aeolian Islands
Seven small pearls that tell of a precious corner of Italy: they are the Aeolian Islands, one of the most spectacular archipelagos in Italy, with a particular charm made of wind and fire, active volcanoes, small ports with calm waters and colorful villages. Among the Italian islands they are the only ones to host a volcano in almost constant activity, that of Stromboli, simply called "Iddu" and which regularly offers fireworks displays which culminate in the famous "Sciara del Fuoco". Added to this are the elegant Lipari, with its restaurants and shopping streets, the small and fashionable Panarea, adored by celebrities from all over the world, the magnificent and verdant Salina, immortalized in the film "Il Postino", Alicudi and Filicudi , two authentic uncontaminated earthly paradises, and finally the mysterious Vulcano, which from its name alone inspires respect with its extreme nature dominated by a still active crater. Seven islands that are like seven sisters, with always different nuances but all united by a magical beauty, which attracts nature lovers as well as those of excursions, social life, but also relaxation and good food.
ELBA ISLAND
This island is located in the Tuscany region and is also the largest of the Tuscan islands. It is positioned as the third largest Italian island by surface area. It is famous for its beaches, its crystal clear waters and for its territory rich in history. Here you can go scuba diving to admire the beauty of the sea. Portoferraio is the capital of the island of Elba, the main and most populated town on the island. Here Cosimo de' Medici, the last Duke of Florence, had an unassailable defense fortress built, making this city one of the most important coastal cities in the Mediterranean.
Well, now all you have to do is plan your trip and visit one of these islands, perhaps even as part of a more complex trip, like this one where I talk about how to visit Italy in 10 days.
